The Swing Jacket is, as it’s name implies, a Jacket which turns any suitable structure into a swing. The mechanism, hidden under the large collar of the jacket, is a set of ropes and strings loosely connected to the Jacket itself, to ensure a somewhat safe playground experience. Obviously… choosing the right structure is key and totally up to the wearer.
The main motivation for this project was the amount of phoney safety standards industrial designers have to deal with every day. Not to mention that most of these standards purely protect manufacturers rather than users. Instead I wanted to create something that takes people out of these standards, giving them the opportunity to explore new ways of seeing their environment, always acting on their own responsibility. The kind of responsibility you learn from falling off a tree because you climed up way too high but also the amazing experience you get once you made it to the top. Industrial design somehow became more complicated than that…. but it really shouldn’t be.
Figuring out a simple and lightweight yet strong swing mechanism and learning how sew were the two main challenges for me. But after hours and hours of YouTube tutorials, and a lot of failed swing attempts I actually managed to create a pretty decent Swing Jacket prototype.
